President Obama Ends Torture by US

Today, as one of his first acts in office, President Obama signed an executive order banning torture. He also set a timeline to close Guantanamo Bay prison and secret CIA detention sites.

Though there is still much work to do to assure that U.S.-sponsored torture will never happen again, Disciples and other people of faith and conscience can certainly rejoice in this wonderful news.

Resolution 0721, adopted by the 2007 General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) meeting in Forth Worth, Texas, urged Disciples in all manifestations of the church to oppose torture and support the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. In response, DJAN (Disciples Justice Action Network) joined the leadership of the Campaign, the Office of the General Minister and President endorsed the campaign, and the Disciples Center for Public Witness began emailing regular alerts inviting Disciples to sign letters and statements opposing torture. GMP Watkins signed a letter released to the press.
