President Obama Issues Memorandum on Hospital Visitation Rights

President Obama yesterday signed a memorandum addressing issues of  hospital visitation, medical decision-making, and other health care issues that affect patients and their families. This memorandum requires hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid to respect the rights of patients to designate their visitors (including non-family visitors) and to honor the decision by patients concerning the person they choose to grant medical power of attorney (including an LGBT partner).

Disciples leadership responded positively to this action by the President.  "No one should be denied the right to see a loved one in the hospital, especially when that loved one is seriously ill,"  said Dr. Sharon E. Watkins, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  "We praise God for this common-sense and compassionate approach."
