JOB OPENING: AAUW Seeking Grassroots Advocacy Manager

Summary Description: The Grassroots Advocacy Manager develops and implements the association’s national voter education and “Get out the Vote” campaigns and coordinates grassroots advocacy activities in the states to grow membership ranks.

Essential Duties:

• Develop effective state advocacy strategies and AAUW participation in the elections process and works with grassroots team to implement these strategies.

• Assess field strengths and weaknesses and work with field staff to build capacity.

• Provide strategic direction and assistance to field director and public policy team.

• Monitor and track state legislation on public policy priorities, and train and assist state and branch leaders to do the same.

• Coordinate voter registration, ballot initiative, turnout, and other election efforts.

• Maintain regular contact with key activists in states and track and report progress.

• Represent AAUW in coalitions to develop effective state and local grassroots advocacy strategies and collaborate with other campaigns and organizations as appropriate.

• Participate in the selection of and provide technical assistance to Impact Grant states. Monitor and evaluate program to ensure it succeeds and reflects AAUW priorities. Develop issue education and election action materials.

• Determine appropriate coalitions with which to partner to further the goals of the association.

• Coordinate and train in-state advocacy and campaign staff.

• Conduct virtual and in-person trainings for state and branch leaders.

• Participate in the preparation, maintenance, and evaluation of annual budgets for GOTV campaign and state-based advocacy program.

• Participate in the planning and implementation of conventions, conferences, and special events.

• Write for print and electronic communications, including AAUW publications, external publications, and local and state advocacy email alerts.

• Keep up-to-date on issues by reading professional journals, newspapers, magazines, and other relevant sources.

• Keep abreast of and implement latest grassroots advocacy techniques, tools, and best practices.

• Participate in department team projects and staff committees or task forces on an as-needed or voluntary basis.

• Take action authorized during lead staff’s absence and use initiative and judgment to see that matters requiring attention are referred to delegated authority.

• Work as a member of the Public Policy and Government Relations Department to ensure the achievement of the association’s objectives.

• Perform other related/comparable duties as required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field.

• 3-5 years of experience with an electoral or issue campaign, nonprofit organization, or labor union.

• Experience recruiting, developing, and supervising volunteer leaders, and working with diverse members and volunteers.

• Ability to demonstrate and establish credibility and professionalism with diverse groups of volunteer leaders in person, over phone, and in written communications.

• Experience working in coalitions with national, state, and local partner organizations.

• Ability to articulate the relevance of AAUW public policy priorities to members, other organizations, and the community.

• Experience with data management, voter registration files, and tracking state legislation required. Familiarity with state and federal election laws a plus.

• Familiarity with VAN, Salsa Labs, CapWiz, StateTrack, Knowlegis, and similar advocacy programs.

• Excellent written and oral communications skills; and ability to analyze and synthesize information quickly and accurately. Ability to create PowerPoint presentations, training documents, advocacy emails, call scripts, event fliers, and budgets.

• Ability to demonstrate effective grassroots public policy strategies required; knowledge of the legislative process and women’s issues a plus.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to travel and work weekends as required.
