Bread for the World Members Urge Congress to Support the Global Food Security Act

Nearly 300 Bread for the World members went to Capitol Hill on June 9, urging Congress to support the Global Food Security Act and summer meals for children in the U.S. We had a total of 156 House and Senate meetings. Across the country, Bread members amplified this message, with 127 phone calls to Congress, 41 in-district events, and 4,000 letters delivered to congressional offices.

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-Calif.-53) just introduced S. 1539 and H.R. 2715, the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act of 2015. This bill would help close the summer hunger gap by providing low-income families with children a Summer EBT card. A Summer EBT (electronic benefits transfer) card is like a debit card which can be used to purchase food at stores during the summer, when children are out of school. Similar pilot projects reduced child hunger in the summer by 33 percent.

Call (800/826-3688) or email cCongresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to urge her to cosponsor the Stop Child Summer Hunger Act of 2015.
