TAKE ACTION: Tell Your Senator to Fight Mass Incarceration and Support Criminal Justice Reform

After months of negotiations, the Senate will soon consider the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2015. The Act has broad bi-partisan support and hopefully will be well received in the Senate as a whole. To help this process, please contact your senators and encourage them to support this Act!

Among the many positive measures, the Act reduces mandatory minimums, imposes limits on the use of solitary confinement on juveniles, requires additional programming to help returning citizens, and allows individuals to challenge erroneous federal criminal records that otherwise may prevent them from getting a job that requires a background check. While the Act does not have everything we would like included, it makes real progress towards lessening incarceration and investing in individuals when they return home. Act now and tell your senator you support this Act!

Our work does not end with this piece of legislation. There is still a long road ahead to achieve justice for communities that have for too long been kept down by "legal" means. I encourage you to get your friends together not only to send an email to your senators, but to have discussions about what else you could be doing to break down racial barriers in your own community. Together we can work towards a day when all are equal not only in the eyes of God but in the eyes of society as well.
