DJAN Calls for Immediate Release of Eliseo Jurado: ICE Detains Husband of Colorado Sanctuary Leader

On Thursday of this week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Eliseo Jurado without warning. Eliseo is the husband of Ingrid Encalada Latorre, a leader in Colorado’s sanctuary movement who is currently in sanctuary at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Boulder, CO.

Ingrid is a leader with the Metro Denver Sanctuary Coalition and is part of national movement for immigrant rights. She claimed Sanctuary at UUCB last month. “ICE’s detention of Eliseo feels like a direct attack on our family,” said Ingrid Encalada Latorre. “His work sustains our family. He has the right to fight his case and, although I am sad and angry, we will fight. I invite the support of the whole community in what lies ahead for us.”

Eliseo Jurado arrived in the U.S. as a teenager, when he left Mexico to rejoin his family. His father is a U.S. citizen and his mother a permanent resident. Because U.S. laws have created a decades-long backlog for Mexicans attempting to reunite with families in the U.S., he came to be with his parents. Eliseo has lived in Colorado for many years, where he met Ingrid. Eliseo is step-father to Bryant, 9 and father to two-year-old Anibal. Six ICE agents detained Eliseo yesterday in the parking lot of a Safeway, even though nothing about his life or his immigration status had changed in any way.

“The completely unjust detention of Eliseo is an attack on both Eliseo’s human rights and the growing sanctuary movement in Colorado and across the nation,"said Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan, Co-President of Disciples Justice Action Network (DJAN). “We will continue to work with other people of faith and conscience to keep families together and keep our communities whole.”

“It is morally repugnant that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would engage in what appears to be retaliation,” said Ann Marie Coleman, Co-President of DJAN. "We stand with Ingrid and Eliseo in their struggle against injustice, and call for Eliseo's immediate release.”
