Rev. Dr. Beverly Goines, Ph. D., Joining DC4PW Associate Director of the Center

The Disciples Center for Public Witness is extremely happy to announce that Rev. Dr. Beverly Goines, Ph. D., will be joining our advocacy team as Associate Director of the Center (DC4PW). Along with Rev. Laird Thomason, Dr. Goines served as Acting Co-Director of the Center while executive director Rev. Dr. Ken Brooker Langston was away on sabbatical during the last months of 2019. Along with Thomason, Goines handled communications with our ecumenical and interfaith partners, provided a Disciples presence at conferences and important meetings (including Congressional briefings and meetings with House and Senate staff), and maintained positive relationships with donors, advocates, and volunteers.

Besides her important work with the Center, Dr. Goines continues to serve as the Assistant Pastor at National City Christian Church and as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where she teaches, among other things, a class on "Black Churches and Ecumenism." She earned her M. Div. from Howard University Divinity School, and both a Master of Philosophy in Theology and Religious Studies and a Ph.D. in Religion and Culture form The Catholic University of America. She also taught Jewish-Christian relations at both The Catholic University of America and the Holocaust Department of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. She has recently written a new article entitled, "Social Justice as Peacebuilding in the the Black Church: Where Do We Go From Here?," published in Building Peace in America (Rowman & Littlefield: August, 2020).

A native of the Washington Metropolitan area, Dr. Goines is committed to the ecumenical and interfaith movements as means to repair the political, social, and economic fractures that have been caused by religious intolerance. She enjoys building and maintaining relationships with other social justice advocacy organizations that cross denominational and religious boundaries to find common cause.

According to Dr. Goines, "I am glad to help provide leadership to the Disciples Center for Public Witness because of it works closely with other denominational agencies and faith-based organizations to ensure that public policies promote justice, peace, diversity, and care for creation. I cannot wait to witness the awesome and miraculous ways that God will use the Center to advance social justice efforts in the weeks, months, and years ahead."
